I've been carrying pocket knives for over 30 years. As with most young men you start with a Buck or a Case. Once I joined the military I was supplied a couple Benchmade auto's. Their quality and durability left an impression with me. So for my personal daily carry in 2007 I bought an Osborne 940 with the new (at the time) S30V blade.

Man I loved that knife, perfect size, great ergonomics, and the axis lock is (in my opinion) the best locking system there is. That was the most expensive knife I had ever owned to that point in my life. And I beat the snot out of that knife for 7 long years until one day.....I lost it.

I lamented to my wife how I had lost my favorite knife. So for Christmas 2014 she bought me a replacement. The Benchmade 940-1! I had no clue that Benchmade had improved my knife, but man did they. I get the same great ergonomics as the 940, same great locking mechanism, same perfect size, but now a few things are much improved. I hadn't noticed how the 940's aluminum scales were extremely cold in the winter. Not so with the 940-1's carbon fiber scales, always a pleasure to touch. Also, the carbon fiber is lighter (discernable) and has a better grip texture too. Also the upgrade from S30V to S90V was unexpected and just as surprising. I never had a problem with the S30V of the 940, but the increased stain resistance of the S90V and it's increased edge holding capability were noticed quickly. I could still put an edge on it just as easily, but it lasted longer.

All said I didn't even know that there was anything I would want to improve on my old 940...until I tried the 940-1.

The best part? About 6mo after my wife purchased my 940-1 for me I found my old 940!!! So now I have the best two daily carry knives ever and a great wife to thank!

After carrying an ATS-34 for many years, I opted for an upgrade. I started with a Valet (great knife, btw), but it was a little small in my hand. That's when I purchased the 940-1. It is an amazing knife! The fit and finish are superb. The balance is great. It fits my large hands well, yet is not so large as to pull down on my pocket while I'm in the office. My only critique of this knife is the clip that it ships with. I had the knife come out of my pocket while driving a couple times. Thankfully Emily guided me to the right deep concealment clip (the 810 Contego clip). Now it is the perfect EDC knife for both the office and my farm!

I've long been a fan of Warren Osborne. I carried a 470 Emissary for years and considered it to be a perfect Gentleman's EDC. Unfortunately, the 470 was misplaced (and only recently found under my pick-up's seat). My second favorite was the 940 which I kept NIB for my collection. My son has the same taste in blades as I do, so for his last birthday, I turned him loose with a choice of any of my collection. He left happily with the 940 with green anodized handle. Faced with a dilemma, I bought a 940-1. I fell in love with it immediately! The carbonfiber feels as strong as steel but is extremely lightweight. While not as light as a 530, it runs close! The S90V retains a sharp edge even after much abuse. A few strokes on a ceramic sharpener and once again it's sharp enough to shave. The quality of workmanship is exceptional. The slim and smooth build fits comfortably in my pocket. I highly recommend this masterpiece. I was saddened to hear of Mr. Osborne's passing.

I have been dreaming about getting a 940-1, Kind of a grail knife for me. Imagine my disappointment when the spray paint on the pocket clip messed up my pants. A 580 comes with a nice parkerized clip, but the high dollar 940-1 comes with spray paint.
