i actually have two of these, i own a custom one that my aunt got me. and a standard 583.

first off, ive used the 583 for almost 2 years now and there is literally no play in the blade. i just recently took it apart to clean and the spring assist mechanism deserves alot more credit for what it is (with the axis lock). it almost seems as though the blade is always under spring tension, but when its open or closed its not. its a strange balance between the axis lock spring strength and the action spring.

the 154CM steel is some of the best out there, stays sharp for months on end, virtually no maintenance needed and its next to impossible to break.

by far this is the best knife for general purpose that ive ever used. id bet just about anything on this knife performing better than any other on the market.

like i said, i've never spent my own money on a Barrage but i've used one for years before buying a 580SBK Boost. the Barrage is an excellent knife, definitely well deserving of its classic status and near legendary performance. of their folders, it's Benchmade's signature knife, IMO, as it offers a near perfect balance of performance and value. i like the Barrage so much, i've begun designing a custom version to gift to my father for father's day this year. as a Vietnam veteran, i've cobbled together a design featuring his paratrooper wings and 173d Airborne patch laser-etched onto each side of a satin, combo edge blade. topped off with blacked out hardware and olive grips i hope it's a worthy gift. in a way it's my chance to return to him the one he had given to me many years ago when i enlisted.

I own several BM knives and this is my favorite EDC. The weight, shape and size just seem to perfectly fit my hand. The high quality construction and materials is apparent the first time you hold this knife. Benchmade knocked another one out of the park with this knife. Thanks BM

Wow! My first Benchmade knife and I can't open the thing without breaking my thumb! And it doesn't exactly snap open either. I ordered some of Benchmade's cleaner and oil for another $20 which I don't think I should have had to, but I'll give it a chance.

The blade and liners are solid, but the plastic feels out of place on such a good frame and blade also the assisted spring feels a little light for the heavy blade.

3rd Benchmade first custom. First this knife is a great knife attention to detail is great. It holds an awesome edge and 2 years later is the smoothest knife I own. The locking system and bearing on the blade are so well designed you dont need the spring assist. I used to recommend Benchmade.

Had this knife for about a year and a half now and it was my first Benchmade. It is my primary EDC both on-duty as a LEO and off-duty.The knife has been used extensively in a variety of conditions and environments (Heavy rain, snow, dirt, mud, sand) and yet is still sharp and still looks almost like new. I just ordered a second one and will definitely be purchasing many more Benchmade knives in the future!

Over the years I have had one mini standard Barrage which I still have and use, 2 full size 581 full up with bolsters/coated M390 blades and recently just got my first Custom Shop full size Barrage in an awesome desert tan standard G10 pattern, all black hardware with of course the serrated 20CV black coated blade. I have NEVER had any of my Barrage knives fail me in any way at all. The fact that Osbourne designed in an actual LOCK into the back spacer that you can lock the knife closed AND open is just GENIUS. Despite the prices of them they are still high value as if these were made by any other company they would start at $250.

I order a custom barrage for my husband for Christmas and he was blown away with the quality. He has always had Kershaw knives and they do they job but this is on a whole other level. Yes this knife is a little bit expensive but your getting your moneys worth for the quality and customer service. If your looking for a knife company that stand behind their product and services this is it, we will be purchasing more in the future for sure! Thank you Benchmade for caring about craftsmanship!
