Posted onPerfect Hiking KnifeI was needing a small light weight knife when I hiking/backpacking. I choose this knife for the quality of the steel, that will hold up in bad weather. It is strapped to the side of my backpack strap for easy and fast access. It’s a great knife
Posted onPerfect sizeI own a fixed Adamas and although it's a nice knife, the sheath it comes with makes it difficult for edc. This 101 Backup is perfect. I am using it with the supplied Velcro straps and sheath around my belt. This setup sits nice and tight to my waist unlike the long handle and bulky sheath block of the Adamas. It is very likely l will order more of these. Benchmade priced it right and built it right. This is a win, win in my book.
Posted onOutstanding Self Defense KnifeThis was my first Benchmade Knife and the most expensive I've bought to date (yes go ahead and laugh). I bought it as an EDC self defense knife since I think it's better to have and not need than need and not have. The box includes the knife with its bolteran sheath, about 3 or 4 feet of black paracord, some velcro thingys (I think they're used to wear on the belt) and some paperwork.
First things first, the knife. I am average sized 5'10" 155 lbs, with hands that are probably medium sized. I have to say, the knife when held in the traditional way of fingers on the handle and tip facing up, feels like it just barely fits my hands. When held with the tip down, it feels nicer. For those with smaller hands, you'll probably love it, and those with bigger, maybe not so much. The knife came very sharp, easily enough to do what it was designed to, and overall it is very lightweight.
I kinda like the sheath. It has pretty much perfect retention, and I have ran around, done some workouts, some biking, with this knife on. It has not seemed to have moved at all. The only thing I have against it, and I can't really blame it because it was designed for LE, is that trying to fit a standard belt in this knife will not work. The holes are too small and it's designed (I think, not 100% sure) so that the little velcro thingys can go through said holes and go by the magazine holders. Trying to wear it on my belt resulted in only allowing for it to be worn horizontal, but no matter where I put it, it would stick out a little bit and it wasn't super easy to deploy.
I opted to wear it as a neck knife, which is what I was planning to do and they whole reason why I bought the knife. I used some extra paracord from a former project of mine to make a good neck knife knot, and I haven't done anything with the black paracord yet. I kinda like the handle skeletonized, so for now I'm keeping it naked.
Overall, I love the knife and I think that it easily is worth the money. If you're an LE professional (bless you by the way, we need people like you) or just some random Joe (or Jill) who wants a good self defense knife that's light and easy to use if you know how to use one, I would say go for it. If you're a bigger person, maybe try and see it in stores or on Youtube (there's only one video in English of it being unboxed right now, but there's videos of it from shotshow) before you make the final decision.
Posted onOutstanding Self Defense KnifeThis was my first BM knife and I bought it as a self defense knife. I wear it around the neck right now but I might change that later. I like that the knife comes with about 3 feet of paracord and some velcro things (not 100% sure what they're for but my guess is for belt carry). Knife came very sharp, and feels pretty good in my hands. I have small mediumish hands, and the knife feels barely big enough, so if you have large(ish) hands, this may not feel as good to you as it does me, hence the 4 stars on quality. The sheath is very nice, and retention is spectacular (so far). Overall, I'm very happy with the knife, and I would recommend it as a self defense knife.
