Auto Triage® Family
Product Review (submitted on March 8, 2018):
This was a Christmas gift from my wife (I pointed her in the right direction). I spend a lot of time in and around cars for my job. I was looking for a new (grownup) knife. My wife picked me up the 9170 in black with the drop point standard blade.
I had figured it was about time for me to get something that could help me egress a vehicle, get someone else out of a vehicle, or would be a useful supplement to my IFAK (Individual First-Aid Kit) if I needed to quickly but safely remove/cut an article of clothing. By itself the knife is great, but then you add an auto-opening safety cutter, and a glass breaker. What a combination! I have to admit I was wary of spending this much cash for a knife before now. Once you've seen the difference in quality blade material and components, it's hard to think about getting a cheap knife again.
The ergonomics of the handle are great, and the blade in folded position is cleverly shaped to allow a comfortable grip when using the cutter. The G10 inlays with scales give just the right amount of grip when handling the knife. The auto release for the safety cutter is a little tight for the first few openings, but after about three months of carry it has broken in nicely. The auto Axis mechanism is awesome and the lock-up on the blade is superior.
If you spend a lot of time in vehicles or work in the military/LE/first responder world this is a great tool. Consider this: you can buy it once, or you can buy it twice, 3x, 4x, etc when you break your tool.
Only thing I could say other than it's on the pricey side (but worth it), is it is noticeably heavier than my Benchmade Casbah (4400), but that should be expected given the differences in handle materials. It's on the large side for me to carry in business casual attire in a pocket, so I tend to carry it on my ankle in a velcro pouch. Overall really fantastic product.
