This knife was given to me by my battalion commander after returning from my first deployment to Afghanistan. I carried that knife for 9 additional deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. After my last deployment the knife went into my safe and will be given to my oldest son. I have a replacement Benchmade for everyday carry.

I'm retired Air Force and supported the Military in Alaska and Kuwait. I was originally issued this while supporting the Air Force in Kuwait. I used it daily in my work (Telecommunication). The ability to use 1 hand and open the knife with the other significantly improved my efficient use of time. Many times, it meant not calling on others to help.

The knife stood up to extreme abuse with ease. After 14 years of use, I was at the factory in Oregon looking at other knives. Benchmade sharpened, and fixed a weaked spring....for free. Over the last 8 years, I have purchased 6 other Benchmade knives and love them all. They make great Christmas and Birthday gifts. My latest has been a fantastic hunting fixed blade. While some say Benchmade knifes are too expensive, having a knife that I can depend on to take abuse for now 18 years, makes the knife cheap buy comparison to any other knife manufacturer.

What can I say this thing is a tank. I have used it for 7 years as a Fireman. I have cut multiple seatbelts during extractions. Recently I broke the tip . Not a problem Great warranty and fast service.

While assigned to a special operations unit the ambidextrous and quick opening action allowed me to perform many tasks that the average knife would not have been able to do or hold up to.From a tactical use , opening rations LOL and A force multiplier in a combat parachute resupply at night cutting thick wedding well in front of any friendly. I carry it everyon deployment/day and now my daughter does too on her deployments as a Blackhawk Pilot and her husband is a infantryman as well. Your company has supported two generations of soldiers in my family along with many of are personal uses .
Thank you For providing a product made in the USA and of such high-quality that it can be handed down to generations. There are few things in this world like that today. God bless you

In over fifteen years active duty in the US Army I carried the original of this knife. It went to combat every time i have since joining the Army a month after the 9/11 attacks. I was issued this knife by the 101st Airborne and it has served me well ever since. I liked the knife so much i bought a spare and kept for delicate things and the original one I used for my day to day needs. Much like the other soldiers I used and continue to use that knife for cutting everything you can imagine and a few things you probably would not. I used these knives in conditions that ranged from down pour torrential rain to searing dry heat with sand penetrating every crevice of the knife. These knives have never NEVER let me down no matter how hard I was on them. I tried gerbers and other brands but they all came up short in comparison in some way rather it be grip, blade, sharpness or durability. From a new dirty leg grunt to a deputy sheriff these knives have been there with me every step of the way performing better than other knives. Most people cannot believe how good this knife will perform and look even after all of these years. The one i used like a utility knife still operates very well and is just now starting to show a weakened spring and I guess I will have to learn how to send it in for repairs. I used these knives in harsh conditions doing harsh missions and did not baby them what so ever. I can remember one instance where after having the knife for about six or seven years and just as many deployments I was riding in a Blackhawk and had just cut some IV cord and the craft tilted hard as we were on approach to land and out the side of the bird goes my open and trusty Benchmade. Initially I wanted to jump out with it but cooler heads prevailed. Now I never would have believed that I would find the knife nor would it be functional after wards but how wrong I was. The knife was fine aside from some scrapes and slight gouging after falling out of a aircraft moving 90 MPH and hundred or two feet in the air. I have used the knife in ways that are beyond recommended uses or even wise such as a chisel, impact weapon, round extractor, wire cutter, shrapnel excavator, animal butchering, cutting through soft shell humvees ect ect. The blade is stronger than I could have ever hoped for and keeps an edge like nobodies business. These are the kind of knife you buy and carry your whole life. I have carried the same two for almost seventeen years and would die if something happened to either one of them. You buy a Benchmade for life and you carry it with absolute faith that it will hold up and be there when you need it to be no matter what challenge lays ahead or how extreme what you may ask it or need it to do. These other soldiers are not exaggerating you can cut sheet metal, wire, rubber, canvas and flesh and never miss a beat. My grandfather use to carry a rifle and pistol that both used the same size shell and he told me you buy things that last forever and complement each other and that is what you get when you buy Benchmade. I wish I could sing their praises more or demonstrate just how great these blades really are. Try one and you will know what thousands of other soldiers and myself already know.

I had an original AFO series and was very pleased with the quality and use of the knife. I took it with me on deployments on Hurricanes Katrina and Irma and it was a valuable tool. I wished that I could have taken on the Hurricane Michael response but it was lost during the Irma deployment. It is the best knife that you will ever buy a true treasure. Customer service department was great to work. The spring broke and I called them and sent them the knife. Within 2 weeks I had a fixed, cleaned up, and sharp knife as promised. Thank you for a great product!

I've taken my original AFO on four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and it was not babied. I've cut everything from MRE packages to DET cord to sheet metal and it still holds a good edge. The knife has never failed me and is with me or by my side 24/7. Get one, you won't regret it.

I carried the original AFO while serving as a Marine Corps infantryman in Iraq. I carried that knife everyday while I was there, used it hard, and it never failed me. I unfortunately lost that particular knife, but I've since replaced it with a new AFOII. The quality is still top notch and I would absolutely carry this new model with me if I ever had to deploy again.

It took me years to find the right daily carry knife for how I use them. I needed aircraft grade components and a top quality alloy for the blade and a rock solid push button release system. This knife or any other Benchmade has not once let me down after years of heavy use I was doing business near the factory and they sharpened the blade and changed the spring and screws and belt clip for free I can't think of anyone who takes care of there customers as Benchmade does!! Thanks guys!

This knife was issued to me before a deployment and it was the first time I'd ever had a nice knife. I now have three Benchmade knives and this is my favorite. It is easy to carry and it is bulletproof. I've sent it to the life sharp service twice and I hate to be without it.

I was issued the AFO II, with the tanto blade style, during my first deployment over 10 years ago. I STILL own this knife and use it everyday- literally. As an Airborne Infantryman, I have literally taken this knife through hell. It has withstood the abuse of multiple deployments and about the only negative thing I can say is that it's a little slow to open. Not to shabby for an automatic knife that's over 10 years old! Though it is a little slow to open now, it is still my favorite knife! I use this knife EVERYday, whether deployed or not, and the edge retention of the blade is unbelievable. If you are debating with whether or not to buy this knife, stop arguing with yourself and BUY IT! I assure you that you won't regret it.

In the military I had issued an AFO I. Best knife I'd ever owned. When my son-in-law managed to snap the blade in half, I sent it in for a replacement blade. Since the AFO I had been discontinued, Benchmade offered me a great deal on an AFO II. If anything, I think it's even better than my original! Superbly sharp blade from the factory, sturdy as an ox, I carry it with me everywhere. I just don't let my son-in-law anywhere near it!
You can't ask for a better automatic knife than a Benchmade!

My first AFO was a gift. I carried it on and off duty for over 10 years. The knife was heavily used for cutting, prying and as loud door knocker. It served me well. I finally broke the blade prying a dead bold open. My new AFOII has been carried for a few months and it's as good as or even better. I like the glass break tip addition. No knife should go through the abuse I give my working knife.

I received my AFO II as a gift a few years ago. I have carried it daily since then and won't leave home without it. Light and extremely durable, I use it for everything from opening boxes, stripping wire, etc. The specs say it does not have a glass breaker but mine has a pointed end that is very effective at breaking auto glass, maybe the new ones don't have this. Highly recommended to anyone who desires a durable quality multipurpose knife.

I have just ordered my third AFOII. The first one I got while serving in USAF EOD. Lost it while working. 2nd one was amazing until the samething happened. I have poured over every other benchmade knife, but nothing is as 1 hand functional for me, and purposeful as the AFOII.

This is now my third time buying the AFO II for the reason of my first one getting stolen and losing my second one on a rafting trip. I went without it for a month before sucking it up and buying another. I simply could not find or think of another auto folder that met the durability and quality of of the AFO II. I did my research and shopped around to find a substitute and did not find anything that met my liking over this blade. This knife has become integrated into my kit for many different applications and has become an invaluable to my EDC system. For me, there is no substitute for this knife. It's performed for everything I've needed it to do and then some. I keep it clean, sharp, and lubed and I have no issues. I would recommend it to anyone who who appreciates a serious no B.S cutting tool. If there's one thing I could recommend, is maybe offer a few different blade steels. The 154CM is a great steel, but who doesn't like options. Long story short, you cannot go wrong with this knife. Anyone who buys this already know this. Cheers.

I owned the original AFO years ago and had to sell it,well that is something I have always regretted.I just got the AFO II and it is definitely an upgrade from the original, not that it needed any improvements but they at BENCHMADE found the few things they could improve upon and did.I gave this knoke 5 stars across the board as it is 1 of the nicest/best knives you can buy and i don't mind paying for true craftsmanship, which is what you get when you buy a BENCHMADE knife.Thank you for such a well made product.

I bought and carried an Adamas automatic for awhile and loved it, but wanted a push button automatic rather than the axis open auto. I was not disappointed in this Afo-II.. the mechanism is great, the 154cm blade takes an edge much better than the d2 tool steel blades. Overall I am extremely happy with this purchase, and would buy this knife again. My only gripe, which isn't really a bad thing, is it have to keep the mechanism lubed with dry graphite so as not to attract any dirt as compared to an oil lube. Still, the knife is a 10/10

I had purchased one of these in 2013 and it has been a great knife. It is durable and holds an edge well. After a couple years opening with the automatic, it didn't seem to open as strong. Once I cleaned and lubricated it went right back to factory new in regards to opening. If you are looking for a good pocket knife to carry for years to come this is it.

Original seven year old AFO II recently went missing, so I bought another. The new knife seems subtly different, cannot say exactly what is different...but still feels good in hand and operates with the same muscle memory. The new blade seems to hold an edge better/longer than the older version.

Make no mistake about this knife: It is a large folder, and fills the hand well. It is a wonderful tool for reasonably discrete carry on your body/gear.

Benchmade has done it again. They have made another great knife for field use or everyday use. The craftsmanship on these knives are fantastic. They have a life time sharpening program. What more could you ask for. The auto action on this knife is fast and locks up tight with no play. This knife came razor sharp from Benchmade. I would recommend this knife to any one that wants a great knife for tactical or everyday use.

I was issued an AFO II back in 2002, just before my unit deployed to Afghanistan. After carrying and using the knife for the next 2 years, I got to keep it upon my retirement. I worked in the Personnel Protective Security business after leaving Special Forces and the knife was still part of my "Kit". The knife was low maintenance and kept an eadge which made it invaluable as a tool I could use daily. I recommend this knife to all active duty and contractors and recommend you make it a part of your kits. BenchMade has won my endorsement and loyalty when it comes to knives. I give their products a 10!

I have wanted the convenience of an automatic knife for a while now and I own 2 other Benchmade knives which I am extremely happy with. The feel of this knife in my hand is great. It has the right weight and balance and the build quality is top notch. I carry this knife with me every day now. I have not subjected it to any hard use yet but I am sure that the quality of the Benchmade name and product line will prove this to be a useful and durable companion both on the street and in the wild. Highly recommended!

When I first purchased the AFO II six years ago as a personnel defense knife ,it was my intention to use it only in an emergency. Yeah right, that plan lasted about a week. Since then it has been used and abused. It goes with me everywhere from daily carry to outdoor activities. It has seen edge destroying materials from cardboard to hardwoods, even stone counter tops , working on vehicles stripping wire. It has been used. It is still as reliable as the day I bought it, although the blade has diminished noticeably and the once sharp angle of the Tanto tip blade has become rounded over the hundreds of sharpening, it functions perfectly. After 6 years of pocket carry it was rather slow so I opened it up earlier this evening for the first time to find that 6 years of pocket carry, with minimal exterior, cleaning it had become clogged up with pocket lint and other debris. I was very impressed with the quality of the components and the precision machine work, no tool marks, the pivot surface on the blade was a mirror polish It cleaned up well with mineral spirits and applied a very light film on all of the metal on metal moving parts.Re assembled and it is as fast if not faster than new. Great product, a knife of a lifetime.

Solid lock up, nice tacky almost sticky finish. Thin enough to skip into my front pocket without a bulky feeling all day. That is until l use it. Then it has a nice purchase weight and feel. With a blade this hard l dread the day l have to dress the edge. I have an Adamas with the same awesome blade. Trust me guys, they are a bitch to dress. I had to clean up the Adamas a bit once in three years of daily use. That knife has been put in the backpack it is a bit too bulky for edc. This evening my wife discovered the AFO II and clipped it into her jean pocket. As I'm sure l will only see the clip of my favorite knife hanging out of HER pocket, I will order a twin tomorrow. This is a great knife. Thanks Benchmade for a great knife.

My first AFO has a blue anodized handle, apparently Benchmade made a few colors years ago, like 25? I think. It did not come with a pocket clip, and Benchmade wouldn't put one on, so I had my father in law put one on, he was a tool and dye craftsman. It still holds well. My second one I gave to a friend going to Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer School. I assume he is still using it in his new career as a police officer. These are great knives but my favorite is still the Presidio 5000!

Most people have never needed to rely on a simple device like a knife , I have, A friend talked me into purchasing one of these blades at the Houston NRA. I now own two. Service has been outstanding from Benchmade. This is a tool that you can rely on in truly life altering moments. Good stuff isn't cheap and there is nothing cheep about the performance of this Knife. It is like a razor out of the box and stays that way for a really long time despite abuse.

This review is for both the afo and afo 2, as well as a touch on the axis lock knives I own.
I had a 9050 afo that I bought in 2002 and lost two years ago. I used and probably misused that knife daily for that time. Firefighting is my primary job and is why I bought it and subsequently is how I lost it. However it went with me everywhere.
I recently replaced it with an afo 2. It is an improved model and I do like the larger auto button however I do believe it should come with a 3.75" blade or even 4".
I have found this model as well as the axis design to be superior in the field. Wildland firefighting is a very good test on knife design in my opinion as the exposure to dirt, ash, and all other natural elements are always present. I've never had any of these knives fail and am especially impressed with the afos' as they are autos and must have more moving parts. That original afo was never serviced, oiled, or any other way maintained besides the blade. It never needed it.
After losing that original knife I have tried replacing it with several different Benchmade knives in the last two years. My primary will always be the afo2 but I am very happy to have high quality knives in case of another loss.
The quality of Benchmade knives and quality of their customer service have been seriously the best I've ever experienced across the board. I also spend all my extra time in bike and ski shops or especially on bikes and skis. I do have ample experience dealing with products and using them hard.
This review I believe is a "thank you" to the people I have dealt with at Benchmade. Thank you!

I was given a AFO II a few years ago as a gift and loved it. I kept it as my everyday carry and for the years I owned it I never left the house without it. A few weeks ago I lost it on my birthday and was devastated. I literally traced my steps for the entire night and asked every restaurant I visited and friends if it had turned up (absolutely not realistic but still had to try). I knew while I owned the knife that it was a great knife but you don't realize how much you like something until it's gone. I felt empty without it. A buddy of mine got me another one and I was like a kid at christmas. It's hands down the best knife I own (small collection but all high quality) and is still my everyday carry and will be. Good size, quick reaction when opening, comes sharp as hell and is perfect for everyday carry. The friend of mine that gave it to me carried it while deployed and swore by it. I've actually considered purchasing another one as a back up in case I misplace it again in another few years...don't want to go without it again. If you have the money you cannot go wrong with this AFO-II.

As everyone else is saying. They have had a few pocket knives over the years in the low end dollar amount Then they would up grade to a Gerber,or a Kershaw.Been there did this. I've always wanted a Benchmade folder, ever since my brother in law allowed me to use his. Wow what a knife! His was a Styker mini. I came into a good amount of money recently. So I went on a hunt for a great folder. I went to every knife blog I could find about tactical folders. What intrigued me was that Benchmade made tactical automatic folders. Then I went to a local gun shop to look @ there stock of Benchmade tatical autos. I looked @ the Stryker,Barrage,& the AFO II tactical auto in the Tanto Serrated 3.56" black coated configuration. Wow! What a knife! It fit just right in my hand. The big button to engage the blade was just right. The blade was scary sharp. I mean if you looked to cut something with it. By the time the thought cleared your mind the item was cut clean through! I'm not in the military, nor am I a tactical law enforcement officer. However there has to be a good reason why the Benchmade AFO II tactical auto folder is their knife of choice through out the world over. All I can say is don't look @ the high cost of this tactical folder. Look @ the knife it self. How it feels,How easily it opens. The quality of the materials used in making it. How scary sharp it is.How well it maintains this sharpness. How well the clip holds onto all clothing material, even nylon shorts. Then consider the company's support you get after the purchase. Benchmade customer service is top notch. The Knife Sharp warranty is top shelf as well. I could go on,& on about my Benchmade AFII Tactical Auto,Tanto Serrated 3.56"black coated folder. Just free up the money. Make the investment in the last knife you'll ever buy. Then pass it on to your son. So then he to too can experience owning a Benchmade tactical folder.
Sincerely;
Philip J Scalici.

I have been beating the heck out of this thing for almost two years. It has held up great and is no worse for the wear. The action is beautifully smooth and super easy to actuate one handed, even with gloves on. The glass breaker on the back of the handle works fairly well, just no where to hit the window for best results.
