The tanto blade is defined by one principle: maximum tip strength. The American tanto uses a flat secondary edge that meets the spine at a distinct angle, keeping the steel thick all the way to the point. That reinforced tip resists lateral force and hard-surface piercing in a way that a distally-tapered, curved blade simply cannot match. It is the geometry of choice for tactical and hard-use carry, where tip integrity under pressure is non-negotiable. Benchmade builds two expressions of this geometry: the classic tanto, optimised for maximum puncture and hard-use field work, and the reverse tanto, which flips the extra steel to the spine to deliver the same robust tip alongside a belly that handles everyday slicing with more versatility.
Benchmade applies tanto geometry across its most capable carry platforms, each chosen for a specific use case. The Bailout® brings the classic tanto to a slim, pocketable EDC folder with a CPM® M4 blade, 6061-T^ aluminum handle scales, and the tactical hard-use capability the profile was designed for. The Claymore takes that further with a reinforced tanto on a push-button automatic, originally conceived for law enforcement and military use, built for force projection and self-reliance in demanding situations. The Shootout® applies the tanto geometry to Benchmade's lightest and toughest OTF, with a CPM® CruWear® blade, CF-Elite® handle, and a carbide glass punch for a fully loaded tactical EDC carry. The 940BK-03 Osborne represents the reverse tanto at its most refined, with a MagnaCut® blade with DLC Battlewash finish and aluminum handles built for outdoor and overland carry where both tip strength and slicing performance matter.
The tanto geometry is only as good as the materials behind it. Steel selection draws from top-tier options including CruWear®, S30V, and MagnaCut®, chosen for the edge retention and toughness hard-use tanto carry demands, with the secondary bevel angle, tip thickness, and grind profile all dialled in to maximise what the geometry offers. Handle materials, including Grivory®, CF-Elite®, and G10 are held to the same standard, keeping weight low without sacrificing the grip security and durability the blade deserves. Every knife comes from our single factory headquarters in Oreon City, Orgeon, USA, passing rigorous quality controls before it reaches your hands.
That's backed by LifeSharp, our free lifetime sharpening on every Benchmade, and a lifetime warranty that covers it for as long as you carry it. Use the Knife Finder to find the right tanto knife for your carry style.
